"Hello! My name is Gayle and I am thrilled to welcome you to Trail Dames. I reside in Matthews, NC, for almost 20 years now. My journey started when I decided I needed to get off the couch and move. I had no idea what a hike was. I thought a walk in the park was a hike! My first Meetup hike I wore sneakers with no treads and had a couple of falls but survived and found a new life changing hobby. My goal is to hike as much as I can, although working fulltime often impedes that. I firmly believe hiking is about the journey, not just the destination, as well as leaving no one behind. There is no rush to finish a trail, but rather enjoy and celebrate the accomplishment. This group is amazing and with the same philosophy: Women supporting each other with no judgment. I have grown, stepped out of my comfort zone, and made many new friends. I look forward to walking outside together.”

"Welcome everyone!
I’m Celeste (wife, mom, grandma of 8) and I’m living proof we’re never too old to make good changes! Prior to 2018, I was a dedicated couch potato both in my job and my home life (I had lots of years of practice). That year I joined a Meetup group for walking and hiking, although the group only walked and I quickly became bored. In 2019, I began exploring various hiking groups, and soon found them much too fast for my sloth-paced self. Exploration continued and I soon met some amazing women who hiked at my pace. I had found my happy place!
A missed opportunity to hike led me to taking up tent camping, but first I had to take yoga so I could get down on the ground and back up (yes, I was that out of shape). That led me to Trail Dames, which I found fit me perfectly! Since then, I have camped and hiked all over North Carolina and am now leading hikes. I’m still very slow (that will never change), but that allows me to stop and smell the flowers or look at those cool mushrooms or enjoy those amazing views. And of course, take lots of pictures!
I’m excited about sharing my love of hiking with all of you! Meet you at the trailhead!"
